The novel is set to be released in mid-September, and I was incredibly excited to pick it up. A horror story centered around a supposedly haunted movie sounded right up my alley. The story follows Val, who in 1994 watches a mysterious film with her younger sister and her best friend. While Val manages to escape, her sister and friend vanish without a trace. Thirty years later, Val is still struggling to cope with the trauma of that night and is determined to move on. However, the murder of a stranger suddenly drags her back into the mystery she has spent decades trying to leave behind. The concept was easily the most appealing aspect of the book for me. The urban legend surrounding the movie gave me slight The Ring vibes, which immediately caught my interest. Unfortunately, the execution didn’t quite live up to the premise. I wanted to become much more immersed in the story than I ultimately did, largely because I never felt a strong connection to Val as a protagonist. She didn’t feel as fleshed out or personal as I had hoped, which made it difficult for me to fully invest in her journey. The pacing was another issue for me. At times, the story moved very slowly and lost some of its momentum, which caused my attention to drift during certain sections. That said, I still enjoyed the overall story and was invested enough to want to see how everything would unfold. While it didn’t completely meet my expectations, I’m glad I read it. Readers who enjoy slow-burn horror with an intriguing central mystery may find a lot to appreciate here.
