Rezension von Denise NI bought this pre-loved book from thrift shop for a dollar. I can say that this is really worth more than the amount that I paid for. The Women of Brewster place was told not in chapters per say like CHAPTER 1 but through short stories or vignettes of the lives of different women bound to the same place, which is Brewster Place. The book starts off with Mattie Michael. Michael only not Michaels and intertwines with other women’s stories. You have so many women whose lives are intertwined by this place. You have many different experiences. It’s beautiful to see how many stories people may hold in simple places such as a bus ride. Everyone has their own experience that is different from another person. Anyway, Gloria Naylor is able to weave all these stories so effortlessly with different experiences with a long timeline from our first story onwards to the end. It was done so smoothly that you are able to track down how fart you’ve gone. This is probably one of the few brave books that dares to show the struggles of Black Women in the previous years and the issues that circle around them. You have the pure woman who gets knocked up by the good for nothing guy, the woman who loses a child, the woman who has too many children, the woman who is an activist, the lesbian couple, and the woman who looks for love all around. The book has many things to say about discrimination, motherhood, and many more. I will probably focus on how powerful the book portrays women throughout all the hardships and expectations society has of women this book shows how these women stand up and face these odds. The last few chapters were really sad. The issues presented in this book are still issues that women currently face even though this book was set in the 70s. That is why I think it is relevant until today. Mattie becomes the matriarch of the whole book and the one person who is like a mother ever loving and compassionate and shows everyone that there is hope always. I read this really quickly and I got hooked easily. I think there should be more copies of this being sold for people especially women to read.
