Rezension von LechatrougeDer Vampir gilt als die erste moderne Vampirgeschichte in der englischen Literatur. Die Erzählung entstand in der Zeit der Romantik und im Umfeld von Lord Byron. Polidoris Vampir ist kein Monster, sondern ein eleganter und verführerischer Aristokrat. Damit prägt er das Bild des Vampirs bis heute und beeinflusst später Werke wie Carmilla und Dracula. Zentrale Themen sind der verführerische Charakter des Bösen, der Gegensatz von Erscheinung und Wirklichkeit, Unschuld und Verderben, sowie das Motiv des Geheimnisses und der Ohnmacht gegenüber dem Bösen. Das Übernatürliche ist hier real und stellt eine echte Bedrohung dar. Insgesamt verbindet die Erzählung Gotik, Romantik und Horror und zeigt, dass das Böse oft eine attraktive Maske trägt.
