I have read “The Stranger” by Albert Camus in three different languages: Arabic, English, and Turkish, and each reading offered a unique experience that added new dimensions to my understanding of the novel. Camus masterfully portrays a world without meaning, where the protagonist, Meursault, appears alienated from the society around him, yet at the same time, he is more honest with himself than any other character. What amazed me is the simplicity of the language combined with profound philosophy. Each translation gives the novel a different flavor; in Arabic, I felt deeply immersed in Meursault’s psychological state; English offered clarity in the narrative and details; and Turkish made me notice the gap between the individual and society even more sharply. Meursault is an unconventional character, unconstrained by social values or expected emotions, which makes the novel shocking yet truthful. The ending, seemingly harsh, is a moment of absolute honesty with life and death, leaving a sense of provocation and deep reflection on our existence and the meaning of life. In short, The Stranger is not just a novel; it is a philosophical journey within oneself and society. Reading it in three languages was a rich experience that deepened my understanding of literature and existence.
