I’m starting my R. L. Stine era! The Fear Street movies totally inspired me to finally read the books. Whenever I watch a good movie, I always get curious about the book it was based on. Now, we can definitely argue about whether the Netflix movies are really that good — but come on, Halloween is coming! And this time of year, there’s nothing better than an exciting American slasher with fun characters and a well-written, spooky story. Sooo… let’s dive into the series! I was a little surprised that this first book isn’t actually connected to the story from the movies. I thought they might have taken the plot from the books, but now I’m not so sure. It’s a completely separate story set in Shadyside, featuring Fear Street as this haunted, eerie place where strange and creepy things happen — but with no direct link to the films. We follow Cory, who falls in love with the new girl at first sight. He’s so smitten that he’s even willing to go to Fear Street just to see her again. Throughout the story, I honestly couldn’t tell whether Anna was really dead and Cory was seeing a ghost. But then Linda sees her too, which makes everything even more confusing — though in stories like this, a little bit of strangeness is part of the fun! I really loved how the story built up; every twist and turn kept me on edge and gave me that deliciously creepy feeling. In the end, we find out the truth — Anna is actually Willa, who killed the real Anna and is now pretending to be her out of jealousy. A simple but effective twist, classic R. L. Stine!
