Rezension von Carlos R. DiazWhat can I say about the 2018 National Book Award winner for Fiction, huh? I love fiction because it's the lie that tells the truth. There's so much to spool out of this book. It's painfully an autobiography. It's a nonfiction novel. It's a memoir. It's a research paper. It's a meditation on loneliness, grief and literature. It's also a biting, stinging and dead-on-balls accurate indictment about the current state of fiction and the cutthroat business that is the publishing industry. It's also quite unkind to writers, basically saying that they are the most miserable, pathetic creatures on God's green earth. Oh, yeah, it's also about a dog—a Yuuuuuuuge dog! Do dogs feel, think, dream, pine, hanker, long and grieve? I dunno. I know they have great olfactory senses, being able to smell you till death and even afterward. This book also deals with heavy-handed themes, such as suicide and death and how we deal with such loss. I applaud the award-winning author Sigrid Nunez for penning one of the best books of the year, winning accolades I'm sure she resents. Nevertheless, this was a good read. I recommend it cautiously, and—surprisingly—enthusiastically. That is all.
