The body, for a host of reasons, has been left out of the "talking cure." Psychotherapists who have been trained in models of psychodynamic, psychoanalytic, or cognitive therapeutic approaches are skilled at listening to the language and affect of the client. They track the clients' associations, fantasies, and signs of psychic conflict, distress, and defenses. Yet while the majority of therapists are trained to notice the appearance and even the movements of the client's body, thoughtful engagement with the client's embodied experience has remained peripheral to traditional therapeutic interventions. Trauma and the Body is a detailed review of research in neuroscience, trauma, dissociation, and attachment theory that points to the need for an integrative mind-body approach to trauma. The premise of this book is that, by adding body-oriented interventions to their repertoire, traditionally trained therapists can increase the depth and efficacy of their clinical work. Sensorimotor psychotherapy is an approach that builds on traditional psychotherapeutic understanding but includes the body as central in the therapeutic field of awareness, using observational skills, theories, and interventions not usually practiced in psychodynamic psychotherapy. By synthesizing bottom-up and top down interventions, the authors combine the best of both worlds to help chronically traumatized clients find resolution and meaning in their lives and develop a new, somatically integrated sense of self.Topics addressed include: Cognitive, emotional, and sensorimotor dimensions of information processing • modulating arousal • dyadic regulation and the body • the orienting response • defensive subsystems • adaptation and action systems • treatment principles • skills for working with the body in present time • developing somatic resources for stabilization • processing

Understanding the role of fascia in healthy movement and postural distortion is of vital importance to bodyworkers and movement therapists. Anatomy Trains: Myofascial Meridians for Manual and Movement Therapists presents a unique ‘whole systems’ view of myofascial/locomotor anatomy in which the bodywide connections among the muscles within the fascial net are described in detail for the first time. Using the metaphor of railway or train lines, Myers explains how patterns of strain communicate through the myofascial ‘webbing’, contributing to postural compensation and movement stability. Written in a style that makes it easy to understand and apply, Anatomy Trains provides an accessible and comprehensive explanation of the anatomy and function of the myofascial system in the body. The DVD ROM in the back of the book contains video of techniques, Anatomy Trains-based dissections and computer animations of the myofascial meridian lines.includes full-colour illustrations of 11 myofascial meridians and the rules for discovering other meridians• uses numerous full colour charts and drawings to detail the muscular and fascial structures involved in the meridians• presents information on assessment of structural and movement patterns and gives related application to manual therapy and movement education• provides a selection of techniques from the library of structural integration• includes an introduction to the fascial system as a whole, with points-of-view and the latest research findings on the fascial system’s responses• offers a fun approach to learning essential structural anatomy, comparing the connective tissue system to a railway network• video material on the accompanying DVD ROM to visually present the anatomy as described in the book.Full colour throughout• New design and layout• 140 New full colour figures including dissection photographs and client photos• DVD ROM in back of book• A new appendices on ‘Structural integration' and 'Myofascial meridians and oriental medicine'• New posters to be published simultaneously.

von Eugene T. Gendlin
Examining the actual moment-to-moment process of therapy, this volume provides specific ways for therapists to engender effective movement, particularly in those difficult times when nothing seems to be happening. Unprecedented in its attention to detail, the book concentrates on the ongoing client-\therapist relationship and ways in which the therapist's responses can stimulate and enable a client's capacity for direct experiencing and "focusing."
von Eric Berne
"It was only after Dr Eric Berne's 'Games People Play' became an international bestseller in 1964, that transactional analysis, his highly original and innovative approach to psychotherapy, attained wide recognition outside the United States. Over the past ten years, however, the principles and practices of 't.a.' have intrigued not only professional therapists but all those who seek to understand human personality and the peculiarities of human relationships. 'Transactional Analysis in Psychtherapy', the book in which he first laid out the principles of his method, has become a classic in its field, and is now published for the first time in Britain."--Book jacket.
