Rezension von LinneThis is probably my favourite book in the Hunger Games universe so far. Haymitch is a great narrator because he’s so self-aware and fair. That’s a nice change after Snow in The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. I was surprised to find out that Plutarch and Haymitch have a backstory. I don’t know if I simply missed the hints in the original trilogy. Also, reading the names of so many familiar characters brought me so much joy, even though I already knew that they would appear in the book. One thing I was wondering about: How did Snow survive the next 25 years when he was already so badly affected by the poison in Plutarch’s library? The whole concept of Lou Lou is so bizarre and psychotic. Just like Haymitch’s reaping, it portrays the cruelty of the Capitol so well. I was really unhappy about seeing how differently Haymitch’s experience was portrayed on television in the districts and in the Capitol. It made the whole situation even more frustrating, especially because Haymitch is such a sweetheart. He’s so loving and caring, especially towards the children and when it comes to the deaths of his allies. I felt like the deaths were even more cruel in this book, maybe because we experienced them through Haymitch and could see how devastated he was. So many people he was close to died: first Lou Lou, Ampert, Maysilee and Wellie in the Games, and then Sid, his mother and Lenore in District 12. But to end on a good note, I loved the full-circle moment of The Hanging Tree going from Lucy Gray to Katniss. I already loved the detail of Haymitch having geese in the epilogue of Mockingjay, even though I didn’t know the background behind them at the time. Now, knowing that they were for Lenore and that Katniss harvested the geese eggs for him, the scene feels even more meaningful and heartwarming.

Rezension von MariaDieses Buch hat mein Herz gebrochen. Collins schenkt Haymitch die Tiefe, die er immer verdient hat, und lässt jeder seiner Entscheidungen in einem völlig anderen Licht stehen. Es ist eine tragische Geschichte über Liebe, Verlust, Widerstand und Hoffnung.

Rezension von AmyAbsolutely heartbreaking. You knew of the inevitable deaths that will face you throughout the book, but every single one hurt more than the last. The connections to the other books was done greatly and you really get an understanding of how Haymitch became the character we know from the trilogy.
