Upon reading Star Trek: The Last Starship I feel that the story takes Star Trek in a much darker direction. Set after The Burn, the Federation has essentially collapsed, and the USS Omega is left trying to preserve what remains of Starfleet and its ideals. I really enjoyed the darker, post-apocalyptic approach. The story brings together elements from Discovery and Picard, along with familiar characters, the Borg, Kirk, and plenty of Star Trek references and Easter eggs. As the story progresses, it also starts to feel more like cosmic horror, which I found to be one of the more interesting aspects. My biggest issue is the pacing. There is a lot happening in the six issues of Vol. 1, perhaps too much. Several ideas and storylines that could have supported entire arcs are introduced and moved through very quickly and the story sometimes jumps through large periods of time or moves between different ideas so quickly that it can be difficult to become attached to the characters. I’m also unsure about the artwork. Adrián Bonilla’s style is rough, scratchy, and chaotic, and it is quite a departure from the cleaner visual style I normally associate with Star Trek comics. That said, the more I read, the more I came to appreciate how well the artwork fits the story. The rough and chaotic nature of the art mirrors the pacing of the story itself. This is a fractured, unstable galaxy, and the artwork captures that feeling. It doesn't always look polished, but perhaps that's the point. Overall, I think The Last Starship is an ambitious and interesting take on Star Trek. It’s much darker than traditional Trek and won’t necessarily appeal to everyone, but I enjoyed seeing the franchise explored in a post-Federation, almost post-apocalyptic setting. The pacing and artwork hold it back somewhat, but the story and darker atmosphere kept me interested. A worthwhile read for Star Trek fans who don’t mind their Trek being a little darker and more experimental.
