Während aller vier Reisen hat er sein Tagebuch in Form von Kurzgedichten geführt. „Mir, der ich nie photographiere, schien das Haiku das probate Gegenstück zum Polaroid. Es sind Bilder der auf der Oberfläche schwimmenden Welt. Nur daß sie in diesem Fall aus nichts als aus Worten gemacht sind. Die Impression wird im nächsten Augenblick Schrift.“ Grünbeins Haikus sind ihrem Genre treu und eigenmächtig zugleich. Obwohl der Dichter von der japanischen Norm in Vers und Strophe ausgeht, verwandelt er sich die fremde Form an, stört dabei die traditionellen Elemente ihrer Bildlichkeit und die sie kennzeichnende Harmonie, durchaus auch drastisch. So entsteht in der fremden Form zwar etwas Privates, ursprünglich nicht für die Publikation Gedachtes, zugleich aber eine Art interkulturelles Gespräch in und mit der Fremde. Das dialogische Prinzip wird in dieser Gesamtausgabe von Grünbeins Haikus durch eine parallele Übersetzung und Verschriftlichung ins Japanische und ein Nachwort seines japanischen Übersetzers verstärkt
