Lang Leav moved readers with her prose and poetry beginning with her boom in Love and Misadventures followed by Lullabies and The Universe of Us. Sad Girls is her first novel after breaking from the poetry scene that is actually quite lengthy for a first. The book started great like how we got used to Lang Leav's prose. The story revolves around Audrey and her big lie about Ana and how it changes the lives of people around her. She believes it is her fault Ana had died in the first place because of that lie that nobody else knows it was false. Because of this lie, she begins to suffer from anxiety attacks. She meets Ana's boyfriend. The two hit it off despite her relationship with Duck. They part. After a while into their career lives, Audrey runs into Rad again due to an article she had to write about a book that apoarently Rad had written. Again, the 2 hit it off. She leaves Duck. Finally, she reveals her secret to Rad. She leaves for Australia, meets another guy but is called back for Candela's wedding and returns home. She visits Rad and after a while get back together. Then she finds out  through Freddy's death, the secret Rad was hiding. First of all, the book made me sad. It made me a sad girl like its title and its protagonist. It's as if he book was doomed from the start to be sad. Even the ending itself wasn't happy though they stayed together. The writing was typical of how Leav would write her prose or poetry. The characters were dead except for Audrey and Rad. Everyone else was so flat especially Lucy's character who played the typical good girl friend. I thought things would et even more exciting but they didn't reach my expectation such as how could a lie be kept and not be proven false for so long? Why didn't an investigation haplen that proved it was not a suicide? Didn't they realize Rad was here during Ana's death? Some names rise up but do not come back anymore. It wouldn't be necessary to place them and rather give a different scenario that still leads to the same result. Candela's drama wasn't even necessary in the story. It's like it just needed some lengthening. The plot was lacking a good climax. Instead, it went on straight. I thought it would focus on her mistake and the death, bu it was a love story. More elements of suspense could have kept a reader going. The story was just a love story, with nothing new. Although it did give an insight about her thoughts on love during the ending. The ending was very abrupt that it would come as a surprise to the reader and make them go "oh. That's it?" I like Lang Leav's poetry and prose but this isn't a favorite of mine. It is her first try at it anyway but I guess it's just an "ok" type of book to pick up. It's easy to read but very long if you're up to it. This book gets a 3 over 5.
