Rezension von LeonieIch hatte mich sehr auf dieses Buch gefreut. Nach meinem ersten Buch von Awad, Bunny, wusste ich schon, worauf ich mich stilistisch einlassen werde: Magic Realism. Und genau das habe ich auch bekommen. Das Buch spielt im 21. Jahrhundert in den USA, in einem eigentlich realistischen Setting – bis dann Dinge passieren, die mit den Naturgesetzen nicht erklärbar sind, aber einfach hingenommen werden. Die Autorin spielt hier vor allem mit verschiedenen Märchenelementen. Generell gibt es viele Referenzen zu Mystik und Märchen, was mir sehr gut gefallen hat. Inhaltlich begleiten wir eine junge Frau, die einerseits die Trauer um den Verlust ihrer Mutter bewältigen muss und sich andererseits seit ihrer Kindheit mit Schönheitsnormen und -idealen auseinandersetzt. Das Buch spielt dabei mit Schönheitsidealen sowie mit einer kapitalistischen Kultur und einem riesigen Markt, der Unsicherheiten ausnutzt, um das Streben nach immer mehr Schönheit und ewiger Jugend zu fördern. Die ersten zwei Drittel habe ich regelrecht verschlungen – sie haben mir sehr gut gefallen. Im letzten Drittel wurde die Handlung dann jedoch etwas repetitiv und hatte einige Längen. Zwei Charaktere habe ich nicht ganz verstanden; ich frage mich, warum sie überhaupt Teil der Geschichte waren. Das Buch hätte wohl auch ohne sie funktioniert. Alles in allem hat es mir aber ganz gut gefallen und mich auch zum Nachdenken angeregt. Bunny fand ich trotzdem besser…
