Well, they certainly were on the road, weren’t they? I liked this book. I enjoyed most of it. But I expected and wanted to like it more. While it can be mildly inspiring at times, in the sense that I think these kinds of cross-country trips and hitchhiking are very interesting and something I’d like to do, I wasn’t much impressed with the characters all the time. I was fascinated by them, sure, but I think they’re pretentious white boys who are super sexist and make one terrible decision after the other. Now, it was written in the 50s and is set in the 40s and that can be intriguing and it is a times, but not all the time. Reading about Dean jumping around to some music like ten times just gets repetitive. In general, while I think he’s somewhat fascinating, I don’t think I’d manage to spend a single hour in a room with Dean. I wanted this to be as life-changing to me as it was to people like Bob Dylan, but it wasn’t. I think it’s a great book with some amazing parts, but it’s also got parts that aren’t and I understand every bit of criticism the characters, the writing style and Kerouac get. 3.5/5 stars.
