Rezension von Eileen Dierner Dieses ist zwar nicht mein liebstes Buch von Stacey Halls, aber es ist trotzdem lesenswert. Alles kommt recht langsam in die Gänge, die Spannung wird durch die vielen Alltagssituationen nur sehr langsam aufgebaut. Jedoch verstreut Halls viele kleine Mysterien darin, sodass man dennoch weiterliest. Das letzte Drittel ist definitiv das Beste, weil hier endlich Klarheit in die Geschichte kommt und etwas *passiert*. Der Showdown und das Finale haben mir sehr gut gefallen, was den zähen Aufbau halbwegs wettmacht.
Rezension von EllemirEine junge Frau nimmt zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts eine Stelle als Nanny bei einer Familie im ländlichen Yorkshire an. Schon bald bemerkt sie, dass in der Familie etwas nicht stimmt. Aber sie hat auch ihr eigenes Päckchen an Sorgen und Problemen zu schultern. Die Mutter der Kinder scheint labil und verschlossen, der Vater dagegen wirkt offen und um Frau und Kinder besorgt. Auch die Interaktionen mit den Bediensteten und Bewohnern des Dorfes werfen Fragen auf. Dieses Buch ist, auch wenn das Setting anderes vermuten lässt, kein Schauerroman oder Thriller, sondern ein historischer Roman, der aus der Sicht einer jungen Frau erzählt wird, die eine der wenigen Möglichkeiten nutzt, die Frauen damals zur Verfügung standen, um Geld zu verdienen, ihren Platz im Leben zu finden und den Kindern, die ihr anvertraut sind, helfen will. In diese gut erzählte und spannende Geschichte sind Rückblicke auf die Kindheit der Protagonistin eingeflochten, die ihre Entscheidungen und Handlungsweisen verständlicher machen.
