Today we know St. Luke is known from the Bible, but in his time he was Lucanus, a Greek, and a man of science. Taylor Caldwell brings to life as a man who loved, knew bereavement, and traveled; a complex and brilliant man who grew up in the household of his stepfather, the Roman governor of Antioch, studied medicine in Alexandria, and became one of the greatest physicians of the ancient world. In Jesus, he found the God he had been seeking. Lucanus visited the places where He had been, questioning everyone who had known or heard Him and from that wrote what we now know as the Gospel according to St. Luke.Caldwell's own travels through the Holy Land and meticulous research make Dear and Glorious Physician a fully developed portrait and a colorful re-creation of ancient Roman life, contrasting in its decadence with the new world that Christianity was bringing into being.
