Ambrose Bierce was one of the strangest phenomena of American letters. The adjectives used to describe his writing — and character — tend to have a rather uncomplimentary ring: "venomous," "vindictive," "paranoid," "rancorous," "malevolent"; yet few would deny his brilliance of intellect and style.
