Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982 by Cho Nam-Joo is a thought-provoking yet infuriating read that explores the struggles of a woman trapped by the constraints of societal expectations and gender roles. The protagonist, Kim Jiyoung, lives an ordinary life, yet her experience is a profound commentary on the deep-seated patriarchy that defines South Korean society. While I can understand and sympathize with her decisions, the overwhelming sense of helplessness she faces throughout the novel was frustrating to witness. The story is painfully relatable, showing how the small, everyday injustices pile up, creating a life of quiet desperation for women. I found myself wanting to shake the men in the book—her husband, her colleagues, even her father—hoping they would wake up to the reality of their actions and acknowledge the emotional labor and sacrifice women endure. However, their indifference only deepens the sense of isolation and powerlessness that Kim Jiyoung experiences. This book made me angry, but in a necessary way. It forces readers to confront the systemic issues that perpetuate gender inequality.
