This is a gorgeously written novel with prose and passages that are not only breathtaking but also flat-out awesome. The wordplay, metaphors and ability to bend the English language to her bidding are this novel's greatest attributes. The aforementioned praise is its greatness. Here is what I didn't like about it in spite of myself: the two main protagonists, they were both disgusting and delectable; the story was mainly meh; some of the plot devices were implausible; and holy fuck was it pretentious! Yet, I couldn't stop reading Lauren Groff's narrative about one marriage told by each of the husband and wife's unique perspective. The fate belongs to Lotto and the fury is owned by Mathilde. Twenty-four years of their marital experience is related between 1991 and 2015. They comment on the changing world as their marriage goes from great to good to golly. During the marriage, Mathilde brings home the bacon while Lotto works on his art, trying to become a successful playwright. Nary working a day. This situation enough leads to unique perspectives that are both inspirational and infuriating. On a personal note, I lament to admit that Lotto reminded me too much of myself during my salad days when I engaged in frivolous activities, eschewing reading whenever possible. I'll read another novel penned by this excellent author, but it won't be anytime soon. That is all.
