This. Is. Perfection. The prose is light and dynamic. The story engaging and touching. The characters are genuine women enduring heartbreak and drama and friendship - I grew so close to them that I really hope there will be a sequel in 2039, and I will learn how their lives played out, how they managed the new challenges. Because it is a novel about that: about struggle, burden, dare. But also about laughter, intense moments, sharing. I am deeply moved by this book and these women. “You must keep hold of sour friendships, Lissa. The women. They’re the only thing that will save you in the end.” “Three months later she is pregnant. Nine months later they are married. Seventeen months later she is living in Canterbury. It is as though life has decided for her. Has picked her up and turned her round and deposited her a long, long way from home.” “Hannah grins, and begins to understand that the force she saw running beneath Cate’s mild exterior, although she does not have the words for it yet, is subversion. She is a girl with a rebel heart.” “She let’s out a sound, a shout - of cold, of joy, of exhilaration- as the water lifts her off her feet and slaps her skin.”
