The second book in the Doppelgänger Agency duology by Nina MacKay focuses on Lexi. In the prequel, she was introduced as the joyful and avid animal lover who runs the cattery where Kolly worked off her hours of community service. Due to financial struggles, Lexi is forced to take on a job and is glad that Kolly’s mother offers her a spot at Ognito Inc. despite having no expertise or qualifications whatsoever. However, when Lexi is tasked with assisting a royal prince, the credibility of the tale declined for me. And her not being solely in charge did little to change my perception. Prince Louis, the royal prince in question, is heir to Feragosa’s throne. Having escaped his duties and his impending betrothal to Princess Elena, he intends to spend the last couple of weeks of his “freedom” as an ordinary European tourist in L.A. As luck would have it, he meets an agitated Lexi who struggles with her car. In a spur-of-the-moment decision, they agree to meet up later, which turns into a date steeped in attraction. In the face of this attraction, it is all the more incomprehensible that he gives Lexi the cold shoulder when it becomes apparent that she is part of the team tasked with providing his Double with the necessary training. Add to this his dishonesty regarding himself during their date, and I could not build any rapport with him. Whenever Prince Louis made an appearance in the book, the song ‘Hot N Cold’ by Katy Perry ran rampant in my head, accompanied by a crowd waving red flags. Hence, it is not surprising that the romance between Lexi and Prince Louis did not captivate me, and out of the two books in the duology, this is the weaker one for me.
