Karl Philipp Moritz (15.9.1756 Hameln – 26.6.1793 Berlin) wuchs in einem religiös-restriktiven Elternhaus auf. Seit 1778 unterrichtete er am renommierten Gymnasium zum Grauen Kloster in Berlin. Mit Goethe hielt er sich 1786–88 in Italien auf, wo er seine Ideen zur Eigengesetzlichkeit (Autonomie) der Kunst entwickelte, die auf Goethe und die Weimarer Klassik großen Einfluss ausübten. 1789 wurde er Professor an der Berliner Akademie der Künste. In seiner Zeitschrift für »Erfahrungsseelenkunde« widmete er sich psychologischen Fragen, die Eingang in seinen bedeutenden »psychologischen Roman« Anton Reiser fanden, der seine eigene, von hoher Begabung, aber tiefem persönlichen Unglück geprägte Bildungsgeschichte negativ beschreibt.
