"The German photographer Anita Back spent three weeks in Orlyonok. Although it is not far from Sochi, the future venue of the Olympic games, Orlyonok is largely unknown in the West. Here photographs or stories about the still legendary children's camp have been few and far between. Yet, for most Russians, Orlyonok enjoys an almost mythical reputation even in the far north of the country. For decades, well-to-do citizens of Moscow and St. Petersburg have considered it good form to send their children away for the summer months to this illustrious facility on the Black Sea, Russia's sole southern coastline. In the summer of 2008, after a tedious application and permission process Anita back was finally allowed to visit the fully booked camp.
