Eine sehr gelungene Biografie des Renaissance-Denkers Niccolò Machiavelli (1469-1527), die sein Wirken differenzierend in den historischen Kontext stellt. Rezension : Die Rezeption des Renaissance-Denkers Niccolò Machiavelli (1469-1527) ist mannigfaltig: Den einen galten oder gelten seine Werke als zynisches Rezeptbuch für skrupellose Macht-Junkies oder Diktatoren, anderen als Vordenken eines demokratischen Systems; Rousseau vermutete darin eine versteckte Anleitung zum Sturz von Tyrannen ... In dieser sehr gelungenen Biografie wird das Leben des scharfsinnigen Denkers nachgezeichnet. Der Autor, Professor für Geschichte der Neuzeit an der Universität Fribourg, stellt seinen Protagonisten und dessen Gedanken dabei eingebettet in den Kontext seiner Zeit vor - ein "Biotop", in dem mit brutalsten Mitteln um die Macht gerungen wurde und der Gedanke eines demokratischen Rechtsstaats im heutigen Sinne noch weit entfernt war. Eingebunden in diesen Kontext, so der Autor, muss man Machiavelli einordnen und verstehen - als einen, der als Mensch im Florenz der Renaissance das Spiel der Macht illusionslos durchschaute, über Wege aus den Krisen seiner Zeit nachdachte und dabei aber sehr wohl ein Ideal im Auge hatte.
