The book was really interesting and had a "Dark Academy" vibe to it. The magic system was interesting, even though I sometimes had trouble understanding it. But after a while, and as I learned more and more about the individual classes, it got easier. I liked that it was a different kind of magic, with different factions and something I hadn't encountered before. As for the main characters' personalities, I don't have anything negative to say about them. They had their flaws, but it was still very understandable.. I also liked that the romance wasn't the main focus of the story and that the sexual content was kept quite plausible and low-key. Nothing was overdone or exaggerated. The ending is relatively open-ended, which makes me curious to see if there will be more books to follow up and if so, if they were published already. Anyways, a cool murder mystery dark academia read! Can recommend! Is this a 5-star read for me? No, but a solid 4.5. As I said, it has an interesting magic system, a murder mystery, and compelling backstories. It was a good read, but it didn’t blow me away 100%. I would have liked more backstory in general about the families, rather than it being so vague toward the end. And Sylas’s mood swings annoyed me at times. But other than that? It was definitely good and enjoyable!
