First published in French as a serial in 1909, The Phantom of the Opera is a riveting story that revolves around the young, Swedish Christine Daaé. Her father, a famous musician, dies, and she is raised in the Paris Opera House with his dying promise of a protective angel of music to guide her. After a time at the opera house, she begins hearing a voice, who eventually teaches her how to sing beautifully. All goes well until Christine's childhood friend Raoul comes to visit his parents, who are patrons of the opera, and he sees Christine when she begins successfully singing on the stage. The voice, who is the deformed, murderous 'ghost' of the opera house named Erik, however, grows violent in his terrible jealousy, until Christine suddenly disappears. The phantom is in love, but it can only spell disaster.Leroux's work, with characters ranging from the spoiled prima donna Carlotta to the mysterious Persian from Erik's past, has been immortalized by memorable adaptations. Despite this, it remains a remarkable piece of Gothic horror literature in and of itself, deeper and darker than any version that follows.

Rezension von Sarah Michelle WeilZuerst ein abschließender Gedanke, welcher mir zum Ende des Romans kam:" Geboren um zu sterben und verdammt zu lieben" Da ich zuerst das den Musical-Film und das Musical gesehen habe, ist es für mich anfangs recht verwirrend gewesen, dass Christine doch einen andere (höhere) Position in der Oper hat - so kommt es mir jedenfalls vor. Wie immer hat das Buch auch natürlich nicht genau die gleichen Handlungsstränge wie die Bühneninszenierung und der Film. Jedoch gibt es hier auch sehr interessante Twists. Ich mag sehr gerne, dass der erzähler auf der Metaebene erzählt mit Kommentaren, chronischen Einschüben etc. Und auch, dass er zwischen interner und externer fokalisierung wechselt. SPOILER (aber auch nicht wirklich) Das 27. Kapitel..., all der Schmerz über die Vergangenheit, die Melancholie, die Endlichkeit, die Seeligkeit, die Verdammung Das Ende, Wow, ich wollte dem Buch 4 Sterne geben, aber das Ende... Wow Zuerst dachte ich Erik sei einfach nur verrückt, doch letztlich ist er einfach eine arme arme Seele, welche von Mutter, Welt und der Liebe verstoßen wurde. Charakterlich, würde ich ihn sogar als das Gegenteil von Jean Grenouille Baptiste (Das Perfum) beschreiben... (beide Bücher lesen, damit man es versteht)
