I started Dark Fae after seeing several people recommend reading this series after the first three books of Zodiac Academy, since some of the characters become more relevant later on. Dark Fae follows Elise, a powerful Fae who finds herself caught up in a murder mystery after arriving at a magical university. While trying to uncover the truth behind the murder, she has to navigate a world filled with magic, dangerous Fae, complicated relationships and plenty of secrets. The world-building and magic system have a very similar feel to Zodiac Academy, which was definitely one of the things that initially drew me in. And honestly, the beginning had SO much potential. A cool protagonist, an interesting world, a magic system I already knew I enjoyed, and a murder mystery that needed to be solved? It felt like the perfect recipe for a great story. Unfortunately, somewhere along the way, the book got me in a reading slump, more than I would have liked. I just couldn’t really connect with the characters, and I found some of the relationships and the way they developed to be questionable and, at times, not very believable. I think my biggest problem was simply that I wasn’t emotionally invested enough in the characters or their relationships to really care about what was happening. And when a story relies so heavily on those relationships, that made it difficult for me to stay engaged. I might come back to this series eventually, but for now, I think I’m going to put it on pause and go back to Zodiac Academy. Maybe I’ll have a better experience with it at another point, but right now, I just don’t feel the urge to continue.
