Rezension von Raphaela Seit dem grausamen Tod seiner Eltern wächst Peter im katholischen Waisenhaus St Vincent auf. Die alten Priester sind streng, harte Arbeit, Disziplin, Hunger und Strafe sind an der Tagesordnung. Nun ist Peter mit 16 Jahren der Älteste der 30 Waisenjungs und gerade hin und hergerissen, zwischen der Entscheidung, wie sein Leben weitergehen soll. Sein väterlicher Freund, Vater Andrew hofft darauf, dass Peter ebenfalls Priester wird und sie gemeinsam das Waisenhaus leiten werden und die Lebensbedingungen der Kinder dort revolutionieren, weg von den brutalen Methoden der aktuellen Leiter. Aber dann ist da noch Grace und die Aussicht auf eine Zukunft mit ihr. Doch all das das wir unwichtig, als der Sheriff eines Nachts mit einem Verletzten Zuflucht im Waisenhaus sucht. Der Verwundete übersteht die Nacht nicht, doch mit seinem Tod hält etwas böses in St Vincent Einzug, das immer mehr der Jungen in ihren Bann zieht. Das Buch hat seine Schwächen. Die instabilen Perspektiven und der ständige Wechsel sind bisweilen etwas anstrengend und die Sprache ist oftmals einfach zu anachronistisch. Ändert aber nichts daran, dass Boys in the Valley eine spannende Geschichte erzählt und über ein gutes Pacing und Timing verfügt. Dass einige der Nebencharaktere auf Grund der schieren Masse etwas blass bleiben und man viele Red Shirts hat, lässt sich bei einer solchen Story leider nicht vermeiden. Wenn einen der religiöse Aspekt - der wirklich eine zentrale Rolle spielt - nicht stört, hat man wirklich eine unterhaltsame Posession Story.
