Rezension von Hamide Kahraman Around the World in Eighty Days by Jules Verne is a fascinating read. It narrates the story of Phileas Fogg, who embarks on a journey to circumnavigate the world to win a wager. Mr Fogg is a pedantic and overly pragmatic person focused solely on the task at hand. His days are structured by a meticulously planned schedule, and any deviation is frowned upon and not tolerated. Hence, Mr Fogg seems to be the perfect candidate for such an experiment, as thorough planning is of the essence for this particular undertaking. He is accompanied by his servant Passepartout, who is quite the opposite. Ignorant, naive, but loyal and with a heart in the right place, Passepartout enlivens the narrative. In a time without aviation, the unlikely pair chase one departure after another as they are being pursued by Detective Fix, who mistakenly believes Mr Fogg to be a criminal. Their journey takes Mr Fogg and Passepartout to beautiful cities and stunning landscapes, which go completely unnoticed by Phileas Fogg. For him, reaching a certain destination is only acknowledged as he crosses an item off his list. Passepartout, on the other hand, appreciates and enjoys the sights whenever possible. However, being slightly ignorant of other cultures, he more than once causes a mishap, forcing the reader to experience second-hand embarrassment. The writing mirrors the fast-paced nature of Mr Fogg’s endeavour as places are not described in any detail, leaving the reader to fantasise about them instead. Unforeseen circumstances and misled detectives cause disruptions in Mr Fogg’s plans, forcing him to pivot and find alternatives in a short period of time, which - to my chagrin - almost always included paying a ridiculous price for a means of transport. Despite being pressed for time, Mr Fogg remained quite the gentleman till the end and was even willing to sacrifice the outcome of the wager to save a damsel’s life. Each time disaster struck, I was left wondering whether Mr Fogg would actually manage to prove his point and win the bet or whether he would lose not only his fortune but his face as well. It remains suspenseful till the end, and it certainly will kindle the fire in you to embark on an adventure of your own.
