DiazMary Miller's short story anthology "Always Happy Hour" is a collection of tales about young women who enjoy their vices, date bad men, make a serious of mistakes, and regret nary of these choices. It is a fun, breezy read in which all of the stories are written in first-person narration, making the narrative more personal and intimate. Keen observation: the word "refrigerator" is in all 16 stories. This word is so innocuous, yet in Miller's prose, it is essential to describe how some of these characters are cold and capable of carrying something that needs to be preserved. Keen observation No. 2: Miller loves to employ pop culture references in her writing. She names movies, books, music, big-box stores, cars, vacation spots, and energy drinks, just to name a few of the things that make up our American culture. Finally, you should never judge a book by its cover. This book cover shows a young woman soaking in a bathtub, eating Chinese food with chopsticks right out of the take-out container, soy and duck sauce packets littering the bathroom floor. An empty bottle of wine stands idly by the tub, apparently serving as the only company for a lonely woman. Anyway, as always, that is all.
