Rezension von LissI did love the concept -and the gays of course. But the plot sadly was a bit too flat for my taste, as well as the character developments. Uhh and beware of the spice. 🔥
Rezension von booq_cafeThe story takes place in Victorian Britain - London. And if that’s not enough to get you on board with this book, let’s review: Two men are falling in love while simultaneously solving puzzles in libraries of fancy victorian houses and with magic as their closest friend. Edwin and Robin are thrown together by accident, but can’t get away from each other. Edwin is closed off to most and his favorite companion is a book - or even better: several of them. He is overlooked by most, because he doesn’t have a lot of magic. He is adorable - there is no other way to describe him. It was harder for me to get to know Robin. Through the bantering with Edwin I gathered he has to be rather brave and in some instances in this book he was. But it didn’t strike me as a characteristic for him, but rather something that I was supposed to think about him. I would have enjoyed to get to know him a little better. Robin and Edwin are everything I want from and love about gay romances. Their relationship is forbidden (or frowned upon), so they have to find meaning in the small gestures. The book also included some steamier sex scenes, that were very well written and showed yet another side of Edwin. The plot was a big part of this book (it‘s not at all a solely romantic story). It stretched an little to thin for my taste and developed very slowly. While I looked a slow beginning, the pace didn’t seem to pick up throughout the whole book. The writing was wonderful and exceptional for a debut novel. The author writes very elegant and makes frequent, but perfect use of metaphors.
Rezension von Jose Manuel Lopez ReyesI adored this book. I tried to read when it first was released and I ended up DNFing it, clearly because I wasn’t in the right headspace. Fast forward 4 years and it has become one of my favourite reads of 2025. I can’t wait to read the other two books in the series and whatever Freya Marske writes in the future.
