What a blast. Mistry webt unterschiedliche Schicksale die das Indien in den Jahren des Emergency hervorgebracht hat zusammen. Manchmal komisch, meist tragisch, verfolgt man die Schneider Ishvar und Omprakash, die Witwe Dina und den Studenten Maleck. Politische Umwälzungen wie die Teilung Indiens oder die diktatorischen Jahre des Ausnahmezustands unter Indira Gandhi werden in dem Roman in die Biografien der Proragonist*innen gewoben und so das persönliche Ringen um ein gutes Leben mit dem Ringen einer zutiefst ungleichen Gesellschaft im postkolonialen Zeitalter verbunden. Es ist zum Heulen traurig und bitter aber nie unrealistisch oder „too much“.

In foreign countries they fear baldness. They are so rich in foreign countries, they can afford to fear all kinds of silly things.“
