I would argue that there is no way of reading "A Field Guide to Getting Lost" without experiencing some sense of being lost. It's what it does, it slips in and out of themes like geography, art, relationships, lore, music, colonialism, history and beliefs - intertwines Solnits personal anecdotes with the more analytical approaches of "The Blue of Distance"- Chapters with the unknown always looking behind the brink of the precipice. I say "it slips" because it feels like Solnit writing this tried to be as lost as possible alone in the desert. The book being its own Guide. There is no common thread (or red thread) and then again I don't think there is supposed to be.
