4.5 Stars. I would say. Man. MAN. That is not okay. SO NOT OKAY. But let's start at the beginning.

I didn't have very high expectations of this. I don't even know why. But then it blew me away.

The whole idea of the virtual reality as an over layer of the real world is super exciting. At first I didn't really understand how it worked. The same for the Warcross rules. But as soon as the first real game started, I understood and all I thought was: "Damn, would this look great as a movie." Especially the last game. (I'm getting a lot of Pacific Rim vibes from this)-
I didn't expect to like Emika either, but she, too, was great. Resourceful, brave, but also vulnerable.

There is nothing much I can say that is not spoilerish from here on, but what I can say is that:
There were two plot twists. One I saw coming from about 100 pages before it went up. It was very obvious.
The second I did not see coming at all. And I am not sure I like it that much.
Many of the question, that I asked myself upon that reveal were asked in the book by Emika too and I just can't see how this is going to go in book 2.

I didn't really have any idea what this book could be about in the first place, save for the obvious story, but it got really grim and serious in the end. And asking all the right questions with no real answers and leaving myself with the same question as Emika.
Is it right? Is it wrong? I honestly don't know.
And I wonder how Miss Lu is going to elaborate on this in the second book and if there will be a satisfying answer.

Okay enough of the cryptic review. I enjoyed this book way more than I had thought I would!

I LOVED this book so much! It was so nerdy! The writing is - as always - so cinematic and fast paced. All the tech talk and looking at code IN VR? As a cs student, I was in heaven! I could picture all the games and worlds jn Warcross. Actually wouldn‘t mind playing it myself. I‘d give it way more stars than 5, if it was possible. I love all books written by Marie Lu, but I think this one will have a special place in my heart.

Honestly I don't think I'm ever going to tire of Marie Lu's writing, this was so so good and I'm so ready for the sequel.
