Vera Wong’s Guide to Snooping (on a Dead Man) is the second book in the Vera Wong series. I had such high hopes for this sequel, having had a marvellous time with the first book, but finishing this one left me in a state of déjà vu. Too much of the plot, the sequences and key elements felt recycled. Albeit doing so is not inherently a bad thing, since great authors have utilised the same technique, Agatha Christie and her Hercule Poirot and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and his Sherlock Holmes come to mind, but here it felt excessive. From the start, the reader knows roughly what will happen - we will be confronted with a mystery, a set of suspects will be introduced, and we will have first row seats as Vera puts her skills to use to infiltrate the lives of these unsuspecting people to solve the mystery. As you may have guessed by now, Vera finds herself in the middle of a most curious situation. She forcefully inserts herself into the life of a rather vulnerable young woman with the intention of helping her. Through culinary bribes and some form of bullying, Vera finds out that the young woman in question is searching for someone whose body was recently discovered. From this moment on, the reader is thrust into a story of double lives, glamorous influencer personalities, scamming and human trafficking. Although I did not like the social media/influencer trope, I still felt that the story had a lot of potential. The found family vibes, coupled with the dark and important topics introduced therein, would have elevated the story immensely if only Vera had not gone through the same motions as in book one. Doing so, the story loses its novelty and suspense. Nevertheless, it is a fun read despite its shortcomings.
