The Same Backward as Forward is the prequel to The Inheritance Games series. It tells the story of Hannah Rooney and Toby Hawthorne - two people as different as chalk from cheese. Theirs is a tragic love story, one devoid of a happy ending. Being born into a family with dubious business interests, Hannah does everything in her power to stay invisible. If not for her younger sister, Hannah would have left and never looked back. One fateful night, Kaylie, her sister, perishes in a fire on Hawthorne Island. Her entire world crumbles, and she blames the arrogant Toby Hawthorne for her death. When she is asked by a recluse to provide medical aid to none other than Toby, she has a mind to say no. After all, he is the one responsible for her sister’s death. Ultimately, her good nature prevails, and she nurses Toby back to health. During the strenuous and long way to recovery, Toby manages to break through all the walls Hannah has erected around her heart. However, her feelings for Toby wage war with her guilt of loving her sister’s murderer. The second half of the physical book contains the story from Toby’s point of view. It was interesting to gain insight into his thoughts, as so many questions were left unanswered previously. Toby’s POV sheds some light on all the mysteries that remained after reading Hannah’s story. It was heart-wrenching to witness Toby grapple with his memory loss and his utter devastation when his memories resurfaced. Having read all the books in The Inheritance Games universe, I was a bit disappointed that Hannah’s side of the story was already published in the book “Games Untold”. So, if you do not need a refresher, you can easily skip Hannah’s story and directly jump into Toby’s version of events.
