The Book of Mormon Another Testament of Jesus Christ

von Joseph Smith

Format:Hardcover

For the twelve million members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints worldwide (six million in the United States), The Book of Mormon is literally the word of God, a companion volume to the Bible that contains the everlasting gospel. With the faith now of one of the fastest-growing religions in the country, Doubleday is proud to publish this first official trade edition of The Book of Mormon by special arrangement with the Church. According to Mormon belief, The Book of Mormon was inscribed on golden plates by generations of prophets, quoted and abridged by the prophet-historian Mormon, and buried in the ground by Mormon’s son, Moroni. Fourteen centuries later, in 1823, the angel Moroni led Joseph Smith to the plates hidden in a hillside in upstate New York. Smith translated the ancient language into English through divine revelation. The Book of Mormon narrates the historical, religious, political, and military events that shaped and continue to inform the Church’s teachings. The publication of this edition offers the opportunity to explore one of the largest denominations in America today.

Ellie Donna TuschRezension von Ellie Donna Tusch

In Summer 2025, two missionaries gave me this book. I remember how I stumbled through the park, while a heatwave crossed the country. Now, it's winter and a blizzard is coming. It took me 6 months to read and highlight every chapter in this book. I would argue that I have a strong understanding of this book, but it will take much longer to understand everything. Anyway - These two missionaries became my friends and I am truly thankful for them. But even more thankful am I for the content of this book. I would like to share my favorite verses from this book with everyone who might read this, because they helped me through a rough time: " (...) It is better that one man should perish than that a nation should dwindle and perish (...)" 1 Nephi 4:13. " (...) Yea, give me strength that I may burst these bands with which I am bond." 1 Nephi 6:17 " (...) While I was carried away in the spirit (... )" 1 Nephi 24:30. " (...) And I will also be your light in the wilderness; and I will prepare the way before you." 1 Nephi 17:13. "Salvation is free." 2 Nephi 2:4 "Having no life, neither death, nor corruption, nor incorruption, happiness nor misery (..)" 2 Nephi 2:11 "I know in whom I have trusted." 2 Nephi 4:19 " (...) They should have no king (...) " 2 Nephi 5:18 " (...) Let us stand together." 2 Nephi 7:8 "Behold all ye that kindle fire, that compass yourselves about with sparks, walk in the light of your fire and in the sparks which ye have kindled (...)" 2 Nephi 7:11 "(...) And he hath no money, come buy and eat (...) come buy wine and milk without money and without price." 2 Nephi 9:50. "(..) Do not spend money for that which is of no worth (...)" 2 Nephi 9:51 "(...) I will break down the wall." 2 Nephi 14:5 "(...) All men should have charity, which charity is love." 2 Nephi 26:30 " (...) After he was baptized with water the Holy Ghost descended upon him in the form of a dove." 2 Nephi 31:2 "(..) Then cometh the baptism of fire and the Holy Ghost; and then ye speak with the tongue of angels." 2 Nephi 31:13. "(...) Feed the hungry, (...) liberate the captive." 2 Nephi 2:19 "(...) Whom ye call your king, am no better than yourselves; for I am also of the dust." Mosiah 2:26 "(...) For behold, are we not all beggars?" Mosiah 4:19 "Some harden their hearts, and others see angels." Helaman 16 "Heard in their hearts and blind in their minds." 3 Nephi 2:1 "(...) And thus were all equal." Alma 1:26 "(...) Filth shall remain in its filthiness." Alma 7:21 "(...) And they break the cords which they were bound (..). And the walls of the prison were rent in twain." Alma 14:27. "(...) They were free from the oppression of the king (...)" Alma 21:21. "(...) They buried the weapons of war for peace." Alma 24:19 "For behold, they had rather sacrifice their lives than even to take the life of their enemy; and they have buried their weapons of war deep in the earth, because of their love towards their brethren." Alma 26:32. "(...) I say that a child is not guilty because of its parents." Alma 30:25. "(...) Whom were poor in heart, because of their poverty as to the things of the world. (...) but he stretched forth his hand, and cried unto this whom he beheld (...) cannot worship God save it be in your synagogues? (...) the same shall be blessed, yea much more blessed because of their exceeding poverty." Alma 32:1 - 17. "Faith is not to have perfect knowledge of things (...)" Alma 32:21 "Seek not after riches (..)" Alma 39:14 "(...) And caused all the prisoners should be liberated." Alma 55:24 "(...) I seek not for power, but to pull it down. I seek not for honor of the world, but for the glory of my God." Alma 60:36 "(...) But when I shall come in my glory ye shall be changed in the twinkling of an eye from mortality to immortality." 3 Nephi 28:8 "(...) For in his name could they move mountains (...) they cause prisons to tumble to the earth." Mormon 8:24 "For behold, ye do love money, and your substance and your fine apparel and the adorning of your churches more than ye love the poor and the needy, the sick and the afflicted." Mormon 8:37 "Why do ye adorn yourselves with that which hath no life, and yet suffer the hungry, and the needy; and the naked, and the sick and the afflicted to pass by you, and notice them not?" Mormon 8:39 "(...) A bitter fountain cannot bring forth good waster, neither can a good fountain bring forth bitter water (...)" Moroni 7:10 "And now I bid unto all, farewell. I soon go to rest in the paradise of God, until my spirit and body shall again reunite, and I am brought forth triumphant through the air, to meet you before the pleasing bar of the great Jehovah the Eternal judge of both wick and dead. Amen." Moroni 10:34 There are even more verses I could share, but then this review would be endless. I would like to recommend this book to everyone. Just give it a try. I truly found justice, peace, happiness, sadness and all feelings possible in it. One of my favorite chapter is Alma 32, where Alma talks with people, who have been casted out of churches, because they are poor, which perfectly reflects our current society on people, who are homeless. It is not only the first chapter from the Book of Mormon I have ever read, but also the one, which made me think the most. People think, they are "better", because they have built their own hierarchies, which are based on money and other false values. But I cannot deny that this book is painful. In Mosiah 17, Abinadi is set on fire for his beliefs. There are so many stories about people, who have been incarcerated (and break free!) (Alma 14 e.g.) and also not to forget: the never ending war this book deals with. I truly do think that this book is a nearly perfect reflection of our current society. It's also important to understand the book in its context and its history, but of course, you can read it also without this knowledge. But, please keep in mind that this book has been translated in 1829. Whether you are religious or not, I recommend to give it a try. For me, it has truly helped me with different struggles, including loneliness, abandonment (!) and sadness. The stories, written in that book, truly taught me something about our current society, about my own life and about what really matters: charity and peace.
