This book doesn’t target people who experienced trauma themselves but probably therapists. I read it suffering from PTSD myself and did not find much help in it for myself. I believe for some it can even be triggering. It does definitely show the evolution of trauma therapy and which approaches can be helpful but it is not a self help book. What I learned with PTSD is that the symptoms won’t go away without external help, so therapy is necessary anyways. During and now after therapy I still like to look for some further help in books to get to know myself but I did not find that in this book, even though what was calming was to see how trauma manifests in one’s brain activity, so it is not just done by accepting the trauma.
In retrospect, the book that introduces me to the line, "what cannot be spoken to the [m]other cannot be told to the self" deserves a higher rating than three stars, so four it is. Not quite a perfect score because of a me problem - I'm not too interested in the majority of the book's part five.
