Okay, so first of all, I did like this book! The themes were emotional and super important. And let’s be real—the true star of this book was Eddie. HOW can someone be such a sweet little potato?! I’m obsessed. Protect Eddie at all costs!! Now, onto the stuff that bugged me a little: Max, my sweet summer child, WHY did you let people walk all over you like that?! I get that Silas has been through a lot and can’t just magically move on from his past, but there were times I just wanted to shake Max and yell, “BABE, YOU’RE ALLOWED TO THINK ABOUT YOURSELF TOO.” Also, he gave his trash family way too many chances, in my humble opinion. Like, sir, you are simply too pure for this cruel world. I get it, I do—but after a while it got exhausting seeing him constantly give, give, give and get crumbs in return. At least by the end, he kind of figured out how to stand up for himself… but honestly, the ending wrapped up a little too nicely for my taste. Like, suddenly both homophobic dads just woke up one day and realized they were terrible people?? Sure.. Maybe I’m just used to reading much darker, messier books, so all the sunshine and rainbows at the end felt like whiplash to me, lol. But overall, I thought the topics this book tackled were really important and that deserves a huge gold star in my book!
