Since I really enjoy the book in it's latter half plus the overall plot, I'm giving it 3.7 stars. What I didn't like as much was the first half in which Ian and Veritas got to know each other. Veritas was first established as a smart, cool character, but the way she acted was thoughtless, reckless, and leaving her much too vulnerable. I, more than once, wondered how she managed to keep her secrets hidden for thousands of years with how she acted in front of Ian, who she didn't trust and know at that point. I was frustrated when Veritas was comparatively weak to the other characters. Not because she can't be weak, but because she was first introduced as a Law Guardian who should be able to defeat a vampire that is 250 y.o. if she is over 4000 y.o., especially since she explained in the very beginning that age was power among vampires. Every vampire she knows and gets to know is younger than her but her abilities are useless against the other vampires. The romance felt rushed and sometimes backwards in the sense that some scenes, in my opinion, should have taken place earlier. As it stands, Veritas developed feelings without key scenes changing her earlier opinion of Ian, so her affection felt cheap and, again, contradicts who she is and what she does. BUT I don't regret finishing this book since the second half more than made up for the lack of inconsistency and rush in the first half. I loved Ian's and Veritas' (she gets better later, primise ;) )personalities and relationship. I would've enjoyed seeing more of the side characters, but that'll probably happen in the next installments.
