A beautiful story about finding your people and especially finding yourself. I was bonding with the characters from the beginning. Especially with Ryen who pointed out the struggles of being a young adult and trying to fit in. The love story made me melt! And I loved the way how the feelings of the characters were illustrated by lyrics and quotes
Hab nicht viel erwartet und habe es dann plötzlich geliebt. Hatte die Geschichte noch lange im Kopf. Auf jeden Fall eins meiner liebsten Penelope Douglas Bücher.
Disappointing
4,5- 5⭐
After seeing all the other (bad) reviews I decided to write a review as well to set the record straight. Punk 57 exceeted my expectations by a lot!! I loved the main characters Ryen and Misha and their dynamic from the first page already. When Misha first meets Ryen he doesn't like her because she is so different from what he imagined. He expected a shy and lonely girl while Ryen was the complete opposite - a bully and the leader of her friendship group. I saw other reviews saying they hated the book because of Ryens bullying. But like - did you get the topic of the book? It's about this shy girl in elementary school who nobody liked, so she tried to become someone who would be liked. She wanted to be part of these popular kids which lives seemed perfect and magical. And at the time we meet this girl she is part of the popular group and did realize (and that's the important part!!) that that's not who she wants to be. She bullies others because it is expected of her and because she rather bullies someone else then be bullied herself. Obviously this is wrong but the author doesn't make it seem like it's okay. That's exactly why Ryen finally steps up to be the person she wants to be (which need I remind you, doesn't go very well for her (she gets juice and food thrown on her + she get's threats to be assaulted)). Another thing I found mentioned in other reviews is that their were no female-female friendships. I mean yea that's kind of the point? We have two main characters. One of them is male so only one main character left who could have female-female friendships. And I can't believe I have to even explain this - this is the female character that has no friends at all. She wanted to have female friends. But the first female friend she had in elementary school she left behind because she wanted to be part of the popular friend group. And then, in the popular friend group she didn't like anyone. So obviously she didn't have any female friends because she didn't have any real friends at all!! (Still, mind I remind you that in the 5-years-after chapter she found female friends?). To sum this up - I wanted to make clear, if you read carefully, this book isn't about glorifying bullying at all. This is a book about a girl who tried so hard to be liked and did everything wrong. It's a book about social status in school, about finding your friend group, about sticking up for yourself. For me, Punk 57, is a five-star book (at first I wanted to give 4 because of all the sexually explicit scenes that I don't like to read at all, but I just realized there is an 18+ warning on the book, so that's kinda my fault for not seeing that). This wasn't an ordinary love story. The characters were so authentic and deep (not just the two main characters but also the side characters). And I loved to for once it wasn't from the perspective of the shy and indifferent girl but the girl that left that in the past, joined the cool kids and realized they weren't cool at all.
