An underwater fairy tale that plays with the clichés of beauty, courage, and seduction – and dismantles the Disney princess image along the way. Jane isn’t a radiant heroine, but rather reserved, almost whiny – and yet she grows into herself as the adventure unfolds. Side characters like sea witches, demons, and selkies create a vivid backdrop, with humor that often hits the mark. Vera Brosgol tells the story as a blend of gentle coming-of-age tale and sharp social satire. The message – that beauty is neither morally good nor evil, but simply subjective – comes across without pathos but with bite. For anyone who loves mermaids but is done with Ariel’s 1989 brand of tiny-waisted, hair-flipping sexy and therefore is in need of something sharper, stranger, and more self-aware.
