Penance
von Eliza Clark
One of Granta's Best Young British Novelists 2023 “Eliza Clark’s writing embraces the socially unacceptable and wryly explores themes of gender, power, and violence.”—Granta’s Best of Young British Novelists 2023 “Chilling, clever, and unputdownable.”—Guardian From the author of the cult hit Boy Parts comes a chilling, brilliantly told story of murder among a group of teenage girls—a powerful and disturbing novel as piercing in its portrait of young women as Emma Cline’s The Girls. On a beach in a run-down seaside town on the Yorkshire coastline, sixteen-year-old Joan Wilson is set on fire by three other schoolgirls. Nearly a decade after the horrifying murder, journalist Alec Z. Carelli has written the definitive account of the crime, drawn from hours of interviews with witnesses and family members, painstaking historical research, and most notably, correspondence with the killers themselves. The result is a riveting snapshot of lives rocked by tragedy, and a town left in turmoil. But how much of the story is true? Compulsively readable, provocative, and disturbing, Penance is a cleverly nuanced, unflinching exploration of gender, class, and power that raises troubling questions about the media and our obsession with true crime while bringing to light the depraved side of human nature and our darkest proclivities.

If Netflix' "Adolescence" and Black Mirror's "Loch Henry" had a baby... Spannende Sommerlektüre mit einer guten Portion Meta-Kritik an der True-Crime-Branche. Nichts super Tiefgründiges, aber gut für Sommerabende auf dem Balkon.
Mean girls but they all spend too much time on tumblr
Incredibly refreshing depiction of the true crime "fandom" and its problems. It truly felt like I was reading a real true crime book, including how incredibly unreliably the story is told. Additionally, Clark managed to emulate the late 2000's and general internet culture in the realest and best way I've ever read. Really made me feel like I was back there.
A fictional true crime book with a shitty first person narrator. The subject: grim and disturbing just as I like it. I enjoyed all the terrible people.. My sister is a true crime fan but also very conscious of the genre and it's flaws, I am going to gift her a copy. If you like disturbed teenage girls - tumblr culture - true crime, but you also think there is a lot wrong with true crime. This book is for you!
One of my absolute favourite authors. As a chronically online person this book made me laugh, cry and cringe in second-hand embarassment for the characters. There are so many things I want to say. This book sucked me right in and it was such a good time. I love how dark themes and humour go hand in hand without losing nuance. Such respect for writing this book through the pandemic. I'm so happy it made it to the stores!
