Matt Matheny is a high-school teacher, an alcoholic, and father to a six-year-old son, Mikey. His ex-wife Lucy is a veterinarian. After one of Matt’s former students dies, Matt ends up inheriting her dog, but something is very wrong with him. Soon horrifying events begin to unfold TW: alcoholism, animal violence, possession, child endangerment This book was my book of the year. I didn’t expect to like it as much as I did, supernatural isn’t normally my go-to, but this one hooked me. The paranormal elements are strong, the tension is built great and I cared enough about the characters that when stuff got weird, I was fully in it. The story is confusing — but in a good way. I was constantly guessing what was going on, what the dog was, what the presence meant. The writing builds so much unease, and the ending? I was shook and satisfied. 5/5 ⭐️. It was bold, scary, and surprised me. Highly recommend to anyone wanting a supernatural horror that hits emotionally and unnerves.
