Was macht ein Zuhause zum Zuhause? Eine sehr einfühlsam geschriebene Geschichte über zwei enorm starke und komplexe Charaktere (Sam und Lucy <3) und das unzertrennliche Band zwischen Geschwistern. Vor allem die letzten Kapitel konnten mich richtig abholen.
Wortgewandt und stilisicher schreibt C Pam Zhang mit ihrem Roman den Frontiermythos um. Für mich waren die Geschwister der emotionale Kern, ihr Sein und Werden. Für die Autorin ist es vor allem ein Buch über Trauer, „darüber, wie eich der Tod eines Elternteils durch ein Leben ziehen kann.“ Besonders der erste und der letzte Teil haben eine Wucht, die über Gefühle und Gedanken zu Identität, Gender und Zugehörigkeit entsteht. Die Geschichte des Wilden Westens wird mit diesem Text ergänzt, weiter gedacht, bleibt nicht bei der weißen männlichen Perspektive stehen. „Unbewältigt hat der Tod eine seltsame Schwerkraft.“ (Zhang im Gespräch über ihren Roman) „Es ist die Stunde des Schakals, Gestalten werden zu Schemen, die Grenze zwischen Wirklichkeit und Täuschung verschwimmt.“ „Anna verzeiht leicht, lacht leicht, weint leicht, und Lucy, der das alles schwerfällt, staunt, hat sie doch das Grab ihrer Kindheit so festgetrampelt, dass kaum noch Gefühle herausflattern.“ „Lucys Mund ist voll Nebel. Sie leckt, einmal, zweimal: salzig.“
