Dear Edward A Novel

von Ann Napolitano

Format:Hardcover

One summer morning, a flight takes off from New York to Los Angeles. There are 191 passengers aboard -- among them a young woman taking a pregnancy test in the airplane toilet; a Wall Street millionaire flirting with the air hostess; an injured soldier returning from Afghanistan; and two beleaguered parents moving across the country with their adolescent sons. When the plane suddenly crashes in a field in Colorado, the younger of these boys, 12-year-old Edward Adler, is the sole survivor. Dear Edward depicts Edward's life in the crash's aftermath as he struggles to make sense of the meaning of his survival, the strangeness of his sudden fame, and find his place in the world without his family. As Edward comes of age against the backdrop of sudden tragedy, he must confront one of life's most profound questions -- how do we make the most of the time we are given? And what does it mean not just to survive, but to truly live?

Edward is 12 years old when his parents and older brother as well as almost two hundred other people die in a plane crash. Edward is the sole survivor and goes to live with his aunt and uncle. The book has the narrative strand of Edward‘s life post-crash and the other strand about everything leading up to the fatal moment. Edward struggles more with his mental wounds than with his physical ones and finds a good friend in his neighbour Shay. The two form a lovely friendship that eventually helps Edward in beginning to live his life again. I really enjoyed the various minor characters that were introduced as passengers on the plane. I admired Edward for his strength and endurance and his aunt and uncle for their patience with him and themselves. This is definitely not a very happy read but it’s got it’s hopeful moments and I do not regret having read it. I initially found the concept very intriguing and think that this story is about the best way to depict such a survivor story within the genre of fiction.
