Wladyslaw Szpilman, born in 1911, studied music in Berlin. in 1933 he returned to Warsaw, where he immediately won acclaim as a pianist and composer. After miraculously escaping the concentration camp, he worked from 1945 to 1963 as head of the Music Department of the Polish radio. At the age of 88, he died in 2000 in Warsaw.
