I noticed online that the Darkfever series is an older fantasy series that actually has relatively good ratings online. As I'm a bit fed up with the "new booktok hype" books at the moment, I wanted to read something older. I actually quite liked the story line. The "little sister" who goes out into the wide world after her big sister's murder to solve the injustice of her beloved sister's death. In the process, she also encounters dark secrets and mystical creatures. I liked the fact that the worldbuilding progresses rather slowly and that we also know more of the background. The background and basic knowledge is thus fully served. The story line itself opens quickly but at the same time also slowly. There were parts in the book where the story was too slow, for example in the places where Barrons and Mac move through half of Dublin and we as readers "more or less" get to know the individual factions who are looking for the famous "dark book". I think at this point many scenes are too detailed, which is not bad, but often stops the reading flow a bit and makes it more unbearable. Less liquidity. The chapters are relatively long, which unfortunately annoyed me a bit. Among the characters, the Fae are relatively interestingly designed, so we have not only "beautiful" seelie as in most fantasy stories but also Unseelie, which sometimes look monster-like. The character design was creative, whereby I was a bit annoyed by how often it was mentioned how "beautiful" and "curvy" the FMC was, I think you don't have to describe in every scene how good a character looks, just like you don't have to describe every time what the person wears or how the person does its hair, unless it's important for the scene. The same applies to the male character. The constant description of "Barrons" and how big and strong he is, also annoyed me a bit. Be that as it is. Now I don't have a favourite character yet, I think that will develop out. Mac seems a bit immature, unsympathetic, naive and stubborn to me at the moment. But since she's only 22, that's probably normal. I also think that it is specially so to show that she goes through a learning curve and grows from "spoiled protected brat" to someone better.

It took me almost a year to finish this book - maybe it’s me?! I will probably try the second in the series and hope it will be better
