This version by Howard Brenton was commissioned and first performed by the National Theatre following their successful production of Brenton's translation of Brecht's Galileo. Georg Buchner was born in 1813. In 1835, in five weeks, he secretly worte Dantons Tod (Danton's Death) a tragedy depicting Danton's disillusionment with the French Revolution.
