Over the last couple of months, Angela Davis might’ve become one of my favorite people. I admire her and her life, her experiences, her commitment to the struggle and above all, maybe, her unwavering political views as a black, queer woman, as a communist, a prison abolitionist and so much more. She’s an icon and a huge inspiration. And her autobiography is fantastic. I knew about those parts of her life that were most publicized and are most well-know - her upbringing in Birmingham during segregation, her studying in multiple US universities but also in France and Germany, the harassment she faced while teaching at UCLA for being a communist and obviously her being on the FBI most wanted list, her imprisonment and the trial that followed - and I had already watched multiple documentaries about her life. But reading all that in her own words in such great detail was amazing. And I loved how much time she spent on detailing her upbringing, her education, her involvement in far-left politics, her organizing rallies and protests and all you could think of and obviously the year and a half she spent in multiple jails. I also loved reading the little tangents she occasionally went on and I admire how aware of the fact she is that her case isn’t a singular incident. She spends so much time on making clear that there are so many other political prisoners. That’s why it’s not just ‘Free Angela Davis’, but ‘Free Angela Davis and All Political Prisoners’. She insisted on that addition. And I also loved the prefaces, especially the one to the third edition. I love how critically she looks on her own writing and how willing she is to admit to her own mistakes in maybe using some language or wording that might be discriminatory towards queer people or ableist. That preface is not only further proof that she’s so incredibly intelligent, but also how much more intersectional the struggle has fortunately become. I think this autobiography is a must-read. If you’re interested in politics, if you’re a leftist - a communist, even - then Angela Davis is someone you should be aware of. Read her autobiography as well as everything else she’s written. I’ll read another one of her books immediately after this.
