Longlisted for the National Book Award for Young People's Literature! From the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of the Shatter Me series comes a powerful, heartrending contemporary novel about fear, first love, and the devastating impact of prejudice. It’s 2002, a year after 9/11. It’s an extremely turbulent time politically, but especially so for someone like Shirin, a sixteen-year-old Muslim girl who’s tired of being stereotyped.Shirin is never surprised by how horrible people can be. She’s tired of the rude stares, the degrading comments—even the physical violence—she endures as a result of her race, her religion, and the hijab she wears every day. So she’s built up protective walls and refuses to let anyone close enough to hurt her. Instead, she drowns her frustrations in music and spends her afternoons break-dancing with her brother. But then she meets Ocean James. He’s the first person in forever who really seems to want to get to know Shirin. It terrifies her—they seem to come from two irreconcilable worlds—and Shirin has had her guard up for so long that she’s not sure she’ll ever be able to let it down.

At the beginning I found the main character extremely unlikable and stubborn. So it was hard for me to relate to her, and to even like the book at all, but as I got to know more I started understanding the complexity of this and the whole story had me very emotionally invested. I had to get used to the writing style and I found it to be very "direct" at first, but then I also just really liked it if that makes sense. And wow-by the end, it was just very beautiful. It teaches one a lot about the importance of being open and not judging people too easily. Especially knowing that you shouldn't force bad traits on others to where many people project others judging them when it's not true. That made me think a lot.
the way that the book title is named after Ocean. as it should :))))))))) ps. this reminded me of the forth season of Skam so much and i loved it for it =) ادیت: اونایی که از انتشارات جنگل خریدن، صفحه های 171 227 و 305 سانسور دارن 🙂😑
This book was so beautiful and raw and I absolutely loved it. The characters are so real and so precious you just wanna give them a hug. The plot was perfectly well paced and I didn't want to stop reading. I really can't name a single thing about this book that I didn't like.
